Abstract
This thesis documents and presents a number of ideas that aim to enhance the visitor experience of Nano Nagle Place (NNP). The primary aim of this project is to explore the novel application of new media technologies for the construction and creation of enchanting experiences within the context of the contemporary museum / visitor centre. Though the aim was to introduce technology into the museum space, a leading principle from the outset was to ensure any interventions resonated with the heritage of the museum. The focus of was not on the technologies used to create the interventions but rather on the emotional human experience with the interventions. Museums and visitor centres have become increasingly inspired to employ creative approaches to engage visitors who arrive for entertainment, social and educational purposes. Expectations around new technology to be integrated into exhibition spaces often produces risks, particularly in relation to the robustness of technology, when handled by large numbers of visitors over time. Often the financial outlay associated with replacing worn or dysfunctional hardware, or updating new content for non-dynamic digital systems, can be prohibitive. This, in many cases, can result in a disappointing visitor experience, and often questions the rationale for utilising technology to enhance visitor engagement. The aim of this research project is to explore the application of new media technologies, aligned with responsive inks/paints for the design of enchanting museum experiences. A set of design principles that were specific to the aims and objectives of the research emerged through various literature and design research. A number of authentic artefacts were identified with. They were designed and developed through an iterative design strategy. Through an iterative design and development process the chosen artefacts were tested, refined and were then brought into the museum for a public case study. Following this, their effects were examined and discussed. This research study describes the design process, methodologies and findings that were uncovered as a result of the research study.
