Abstract

Introduction

The practice of sports has a fundamental role in guaranteeing the rights to health and citizenship, being considered an inalienable human right for every human being and through it, it is possible to bring people together, break barriers and impositions that can limit the access of people with disabilities to the rights that are guaranteed to them. Recently, the severe humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela has caused many citizens of that country to migrate to Brazil, including citizens with disabilities. Considering sports as a right of every human being, the objective of this study is to describe the main contributions of sports practice for Venezuelan refugees with disabilities participating in the Roraima Paralympic Reference Center.

Methodology

This study is characterized as descriptive and exploratory, with a qualitative approach. The sample is intentional and non-probabilistic. Twelve Venezuelan refugees, male individuals with physical disabilities, participated in the study. Through a semi-structured interview, we identified the main benefits that sports practice provides to Venezuelan refugees with disabilities.

Results

We identified the 3 main thematic categories evident in the discourse of the sample investigated: Rehabilitation (100%), Sociability (83.3%) and Improvements in psychological aspects (83.3%), these are the main reasons that Venezuelan refugees with disabilities seek through sports practice.

Conclusions

Thus, it is possible to affirm that sports activities offered to this population, in addition to being considered an inalienable human right, can be considered an important tool in the rehabilitation process of Venezuelan refugees with disabilities, due to the motor, psychological and social benefits provided by this practice.
