Abstract

Introduction In Poland, we note an increasing number of students with special or specific educational needs, who need support in achieving milestones of physical and cognitive development. Among them are obese, with posture defects, depression or mood disorders, as well as students from Ukraine. Given the physical, mental, emotional and social health benefits of being physically active, adapted physical activity can be a support for these students. The aim of our work is to present assumptions and partial results of the project "Deficits are not a limitation - adapted physical activity an opportunity for every student”.

Methodology of the project The project is financed from the state budget, allocated by the Minister of Education and Science under the “Science for Society II”. The three-stage project involves training physical education teachers in holistic diagnosis of students (taking into account physical, emotional and social aspects), screening tests and, consequently, preparing an intervention in the form of adapted physical activity for students with deficits.

Results (partial) 421 students were examined (1800 were planned). Their body structure and posture, functional abilities, well-being and perception of inclusion in school education were assessed. The results were compared to population norms. Out-of-norm results resulted in assigning a risk point (which means that the child requires intervention in a given aspect). Only 46 students (10%) were characterized by normative development in each measured aspect.

Conclusions Initial results showed that a number of students require intervention at various levels of development and require support.
