Abstract

People with physical disabilities after an accident experience greater stress and face social and psychological challenges in accepting and overcoming disability. In addition to the loss of physical function, it leads to restrictions in economic and social activities, causes confusion in self-concept and values, and may result in psychological issues such as depression, making it harder for them to accept their changed life.

The purpose of this study is to explore the process of entering and adapting to a para-baseball team for individuals with physical disability after an accident. This study aimed to gain an understanding of the common characteristics of this process, and conducted participant observation. The participants’ lives before their disabilities, their experiences of disability sports, and the process of entering and adapting to para-baseball team, as well as adapting to life as an athlete, were explored using narrative study and field notes.

The findings of the study are as follows: “psychological burden due to others’ gaze” and “setting personal limits and negative thinking” through the psychological challenges and changes in the process of accepting a disability were found. “self-awareness as a baseball player” and “changes in self-image” were found through identity and self-growth via baseball. Through social solidarity, “bonds between team members” and “the formation of a sense of community” were found. Through challenges and passion, “overcoming physical limitations” and “individual growth” were found.

This study highlights the various challenges faced by people with disabilities and the achievements they make, offering discussions necessary to change social perceptions.
