Abstract
Introduction Parental support is a crucial factor in facilitating children’s engagement in competitive sports (Knight et al., 2017). Martin and Choi (2009) emphasize the even greater importance of parents for children with disabilities participating in sports. So far, only a few studies address the significance of parents in competitive Paralympic sports (e.g. Coates & Howe, 2023). The current study aims to present the state of research using a combined mapping and scoping review and to summarize the key findings regarding parents in competitive sports. The following research question is to be addressed: what subtopics have been researched, what underlying theories inform this research, and which methods have been employed? Insights from Disability Studies will inform hypotheses for a subsequent empirical study.
Methodology While mapping reviews are characterized by "higher-level data extraction", scoping reviews focus on "more in-depth data extraction" (Campbell et al., 2023). The screening of titles and abstracts followed the mapping approach to categorize the studies according to relevant subtopics on parents in competitive sports. Subsequently, a full-text analysis was conducted based on the scoping review approach to examine findings, methods, and theories. The full-text analysis was conducted in line with Kuckartz and Rädicker´s (2024) qualitative content analysis.
Results After the screening of titles and abstracts, 709 studies were identified as relevant and categorised into organisational categories (Kuckartz & Rädicker, 2024). Through subsequent full-text analyses of studies from selected categories 372 studies could be deemed relevant and were included in the review.
