Abstract
Introduction Disseminated worldwide, Camp Abilities consists of an educational sports camp developed to people with visual impairment (PVI), based on individualized support. This experience report aimed to discuss the repercussions of the fourth edition of Camp Abilities-Brazil, held in October 2024 at the Santa Cruz State University, in Ilheus-Bahia.
Methodology In addition to 12 experts on staff and 40 Physical Education undergraduate students, the event brought together 35 participants with blindness (n=26) and low vision (n=9), 22 males and 13 females, aged between 19 and 60 years old, from 13 cities in the interior of the state of Bahia. The participants were divided into four groups, according to their level of motor skills.
Results Along five days, the members of each team, consisting of eight participants and their respective counselors, took turns participating in the following sports: Aquatic Activities, Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Blind Football, Goalball, Taekwondo, Stand Up Paddle, Surf, and Yoga. Additionally, it was offered recreational, artistic, and scientific-cultural contents, such as bingo, musical circles, and sensory activities involving handling local fauna and flora species. Among the PVI, 11 reported never having had any type of experience with sports activities before, and 24 stated that they had never had previous contact with the sea.
Conclusions The following repercussions may be highlighted: the satisfaction with the opportunities experienced by the PVI, evidenced in the facial expressions of contentment and in their emotional testimonies; the opportunity that the Physical Education undergraduate students had to apply the concepts about teaching and learning physical activities to PVI.
