Abstract
This program was designed to engage participants with a cortical/cerebral visual impairment in physical activity. We will explore ways to decrease distractions in the environment, use preferred colours/shiny items to motivate movement, and use equipment which is easy to grasp and manipulate.
Program objectives include
- Assessing the potential range of motion of a participant through light physical activity and movement exploration through gentle warmup and stretching, and light parachute activities.
- Exploring ways to propel a ball using different sizes, textures and throwing implements. Throwing, kicking, and propelling with any part of the body. Exploring a range of sizes and textures of balls and throwing implements. The objective is to move the ball from one place to another – however possible. This can be on the floor, pushed across a table, or using a ramp (for participants unable to grasp a ball).
- Exploring use of a target, propelling a ball to the target. Use of a preferred colour/shiny/light for a target.
- Introducing a modified game of Boccia, a sport in the Paralympic Games originally developed for people with severe Cerebral Palsy. Boccia can be played by people with multiple exceptionalities as well as people without a disability.
Participants are encouraged to explore the what they can, recognizing that a wide range of abilities and interests. Breaks and transition times are considered in programming.
